BREAST CANCER SUPPLEMENTS AND GENERAL CARE

Our soil has become depleted because of the increased use of pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals in our environment thereby reducing the nutrients in our food. This has resulted in the increased demand for fresh, organic produce which has been grown without the use of these chemicals. However, even with the best organic diet, it's virtually impossible to get all the nutrients your body needs from food. As a result we are encouraged to take supplements in order to keep our bodies and immune systems healthy and strong. Research has linked a weak immune system with most cancers, and a high intake of certain vitamins, with increased protection. Our cells also need increased protection from free radical damage which can lead to cancer. Free radicals are charged particles in our bodies produced by radiation, pollution, including smoking, and eating fried and burnt food. Through a chain reaction they can damage our bodies and immune systems if not quickly neutralized by free-radical scavengers known as anti-oxidants. Vitamins A, C, E, beta - carotene, zinc, selenium and co-enzyme Q10 are the essential antioxidants which detoxify these free radicals and are the body's major defence against them. We need a high intake of these antioxidants to protect us. Remember that supplements should not be taken at the same time as medication, alcohol or hot drinks as it affects the nutrients and their absorption.

The majority of vitamins sold are made from synthetic chemicals and are not the same as real vitamins from natural sources. This is also why some vitamins are cheap whilst others are more expensive. Recent Finnish studies in the New England Journal of Medicine, and experiments at the University of California, Berkeley, California have proved that the recommendation is to consume vitamins from high end nutritional supplement companies. They claim that if you take cheap vitamins made of these synthetic chemicals you are doing yourself more harm than good. Solgar's ingredients are natural and sourced for their quality and purity. All their products are made with 100% purified water to eliminate contaminants. They are committed to caring for the environment and to the carbon neutral initiative. To date they have planted over 7,500 tree saplings across the country.

A Multivitamin and Mineral - Click to Purchase

Essential Fatty Acids - Click to Purchase - 1,000mg a day of fish oil or 1 tblspn/per day of flax seed oil which is the vegetarian alternative. Omega 3 and 6 are essential for good health because they stimulate our metabolic functions. We get enough Omega 6 from our food but it is usually necessary to supplement Omega 3 which is necessary for cellular and immune function. Fish oil is recommended rather than fish liver oil because the liver is the major detoxifier and may contain toxins. Fish oil also increases the level of Vitamin D in the blood. Flax seed oil is the alternative for vegetarians. Research by Dr. Lillian Thompson, University of Toronto 1999 has shown that lignan precursor from flaxseed reduces the growth rate of existing breast cancer by up to 50%. Low levels are linked with increased breast cancer risk. Flax seed oil is also good for constipation, piles, varicose veins and for balancing the hormones of women going through the menopause.

B Complex - Click to Purchase - can break oestrogen down into harmless oestriol. Oestrogen is considered to be one of the main risk factors of breast cancer.
Vitamin B12 - Click to Purchase - Helps cells in our bodies grow and maintain normal function. Researchers have associated low levels with an increase in the risk of breast cancer. This vitamin is mostly found in animal products such as meat, milk and eggs so vegetarians and vegans my be deficient. Up to 25 mcg daily is the average but up to 40mcg can be taken.
Food Sources: Oysters, sardines, tuna, shrimp, soya milk, yeast extract, eggs.

Calcium - Click to Purchase - 500mg - 1000mg up to 3 x per day. Depleted levels of calcium are linked to breast cancer. Smoking, oestrogen and alcohol depletes calcium levels in our bodies. Vitamin D - Click to Purchase - 4,000 iu - 10,000 iu daily. A study has shown that taking a large dose of Vitamin D every day could halve your chance of developing cancers such as breast, ovarian, colon and prostate. Researchers say that the vitamin can affect the rate of cell division in tumour development and can trigger the self- destruction of cells developing in the wrong way. Sunshine is the best way to get Vitamin D. Sunscreen blocks the UVB rays that produce Vitamin D so a short burst of sun without protection ( about 15minutes for those with fair skins) avoiding the hours between 11am and 3pm when the sun's rays are at their strongest is sufficient to get Vitamin D without incurring skin damage. It is important to avoid overexposure because of the risk of skin cancer, which is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, with more than 70,000 new cases per year, particularly after chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Food Sources: oysters, herring, mackerel, salmon and eggs. The main source is from sunlight on our skin.

Black Walnut, Clove and Wormwood - Parasites. According to Hulda G. Clark's book, The Cure For All advanced Cancers, we all have parasites. The American Centre for Disease study stated that the average US citizen carries approximately 2 lbs of parasites around with them. It is the parasites own growth factors/hormones that make our tumours grow ie. they cause the malignancy. Even in Chinese medicine parasites are strongly linked to cancer. Kill the parasites and then work on shrinking the tumors by working on your diet, environment and supplements to help your body empty its toxic tumor loads.

Further information on parasites - Homeopathy can help to eradicate parasites and in certain cases boost the body's immune system to fight off any virus that may be present. Nosodes which help stimulate the body's specific defences to that particular toxin can be prescribed and the parasite or virus successfully eliminated.

GENERAL PREPARATION FOR SURGERY, CHEMOTHERAPY AND RADIOTHERAPY

A diagnosis of breast cancer and further thoughts of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation can be very stressful. Stick to the healthy diet. Try to eat little and often. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid or cut down on animal fats, dairy products and processed food containing hydrogenated fats as cancer cells thrive on fats. Avoid all alcohol if possible as this will only put more strain on the liver. Stress can lead to tiredness so try to sleep or rest for a couple of hours per day and get at least eight hours sleep at night. Remember to keep positive. Meditate if you can and visualise yourself as protected and filled with a healing energy. Imagine yourself strong and well. Find a quiet time for yourself every day to reflect, pray and focus on peace and calm. (see How to Heal section). Have a complementary therapy treatment such as acupuncture, massage, reflexology, reiki or cranial osteopathy to de-stress, relax and re-balance your body and help to raise energy levels. Massage will help to shift toxins. Do regular gentle exercise such as yoga, t'ai chi and qi gong. Exercise helps to shift toxins and raises the body's endorphins. Yoga is often recommended as it strengthens the body's energy. Surround yourself with family and friends, keep happy and more importantly have a good laugh!

PRE - RADIOTHERAPY (see General Preparation for Radiotherapy)

MAKE SURE THAT YOUR DOCTOR KNOWS WHICH SUPPLEMENTS YOU ARE TAKING, IN PARTICULAR, HERBS, AS THEY MAY AFFECT THE ACTION OF PRESCRIBED DRUGS

Radiotherapy is the use of high energy x-rays to treat cancer. Radiotherapy damages and destroys cancer cells within the treatment area. It also affects normal cells in the area being treated but these are generally more able to recover than cancer cells. The aim is to get rid of any remaining cancer cells in the breast area after surgery and reduce the risk of the cancer coming back.
Remember to continue to stick to the healthy diet, take light exercise and continue with your spiritual practise.
The following foods are particularly beneficial - raw carrots, asparagus, avocado, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage etc which are especially strong in glutathione which repairs damaged cells; garlic and eggs for l - cysteine which is important in DNA repair and oily fish like mackerel, herrings etc. Avoid animal fats, saturated fats and dairy products as cancer cells thrive on fats.
Continue to take the supplements generally recommended for breast cancer in preparation for radiotherapy.

Lycopene - Click to Purchase ( 10 - 20 mgs daily) - an antioxidant similar in structure to beta - carotene. Research shows that lycopene inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells in test tube research.

It is important that you discuss which supplements you can continue taking during radiotherapy with your doctor. One can take the supplements generally recommended for breast cancer except for beta-carotene, vitamin c, lycopene and co-enzyme Q10 - all of which may prevent the radiotherapy working properly. The supplements selenium, astragalus and isoflavones have been proven to make radiotherapy more effective.
Eat a well-balanced healthy diet that contains lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Small regular meals are just as good if you can't manage three good meals a day. Continue with very light exercise such as yoga, and meditation. Yoga is the best exercise to keep your flexibility after cancer treatment because of the way the postures work on the body. It also helps to build up strength, helps to rid the body of toxins and is a wonderful way to relax.

Take kelp and extra folic acid ( 800 mcgs in total) as it is good for your hair and skin and helps protect good DNA.

Avoid alcohol and drinks containing caffeine from mid-afternoon as it could interfere with sleep. Some herbal teas may contain caffeine so check the label. Try to get 8 hours sleep at night. Acupuncture - is an alternative to chemical painkillers which add further toxins to the body.
Evidence from random trials confirm that acupuncture actually relieves some of the effects of cancer treatments including nausea and post operative pain. In a study of 104 women with breast cancer and nausea from chemotherapy ( all of whom were taking anti-nausea medication), women treated with acupuncture experienced fewer attacks of nausea than women who received the medication alone. There have also been studies indicating that acupuncture may help eliminate pain and hot flushes caused by tamoxifen (a breast cancer medication). To find an acupuncturist in your area consult:

Chiropractic treatment - will benefit cancer patients in two ways, immune stimulation and pain relief. Immune stimulation is achieved by aligning of the spinal column. This allows the nerve impulses from the brain to all parts of the body, including organs, to function at their optimum level. This vital nerve supply then directs the organs and all other bodily functions to work in unison to heal and repair, in turn fighting harmful cancer cells. Pain relief is also through spinal alignment.
